BURN, Chapter 23

Posting for Brian. Enjoy, Ran

*******************************

The kids fell sleep on the way to Canard Rouge, but Boyd suspected that wasn’t why Brian was suddenly so quiet. He turned down the music in Brian’s, or was it Ted’s, Range Rover. Boyd’s car was waiting for him at home and this one would get Brian back to New Orleans when he needed to leave.

“Wassup?” Boyd asked as Brian slumped low in the passenger seat, the soles of his feet propped up on the dash. Outside, an evening rain shower steamed off the asphalt like smoke. Brian looked over his shoulder, as if to confirm the kids were asleep, and then answered,

“Nothing.”

Boyd smiled. “Yeah, right. What?”

“Why does something have to be ‘up’? Can’t I just be quiet?” Brian stared straight ahead as he answered. The city was already far behind them, and soon the highway would give way to the roads of the bayou. Boyd thought about letting him have his space, but then decided against it.

“Is it Moody?”

That inquiry drew a response from Brian, who laughed and used his thumb and forefinger to thump Boyd’s head. “Yeah, that’s it, Boyd. I’m mooning over Moody. Shit.”

“Don’t make me guess. Talk to me.”

Brian sighed. How could he tell Boyd he didn’t want to go back to Canard Rouge? His impression of the town, with some exceptions, was overwhelmingly negative. Why not? He felt they came close to lynching him for a crime he didn’t commit. He was shot and seriously wounded in that town. It was a tiny place with nothing to recommend it other than the fact he found the love of his life there. For that he would be eternally grateful to Canard Rouge. But okay, that was done. Going back to it held no appeal. The misery of being separated from Boyd was all that forced him into this visit.

“I’m just thinking of all the shit I have to get done. Being sick really set me back.”

“You could’ve stayed in town,” Boyd offered, relieved and a little surprised that he hadn’t.

“I think it’s important for the two of us to be together when the kids first come home, don’t you? Give them a sense of where they stand.” Saying it, Brian knew that was right, and he let go of his bad memories about the town as he thought about the children. Some things were more important than his grudge.

Boyd smiled at his lover’s classic profile, never loving him more than he did at that moment and never less able to show him how he felt. Brian flipped open his mobile and pushed speed dial. Finally, someone answered.

“Hello, Melanie. It’s Brian. Is Lindsay around?” He gave Boyd an exaggerated shimmer of horror directed at Melanie. Boyd laughed and shook his head. Lindsay was chirpy when she answered.

“Hi, Brian! I was beginning to wonder if you’d disappeared in the swamp! Maybe got eaten by an alligator?”

“No, I only let Boyd munch on me these days,” he grinned at the driver, who winced. “How is everyone?”

“Meaning?”

“Everyone.”

“Mel and I are fine, Gus is fine, you can talk to him in a minute, Debbie is the same, still cursing you for leaving. Vic said to say hello if we spoke. Michael is still sulking, he thinks you don’t love him anymore. Emmett is fabulous, as always. And Justin is home.”

“He is?” He was careful not to sound too interested. “Why?”

“He lives here, Brian. He’s visiting his mother and friends. But he’s going back to Italy.”

“Ah, good.” He didn’t want Justin to relinquish his dream. “Boyfriend with him?” Casual, he cautioned himself, be casual about it. He didn’t want Boyd to get the wrong idea about his interest. It was more a hope that Justin was happy than personal curiosity.

“No, that didn’t last, but he still seems fine. He loves Italy. He loves the academy.”

“I knew he would.” Brian wondered what happened with the boyfriend. Justin was too young to settle down, anyway. He learned that about him the hard way, and it wasn’t any easier for Justin. “Tell him hello for me.”
“I will. How’s Boyd?”

“Boyd is great,” he said, smiling at his partner, who shrugged as if to say he was getting by. “We bought a house.”

“In that awful little town?”

“No, in New Orleans. Area called Faubourg Marigny.”

“Wow. How breeder-ish.”

He let her casual insult roll off his back. He refused to be shamed by Lindsay. “It’s a beautiful place. Six bedrooms, a library, swimming pool, coach house. A showplace.”

Boyd laughed and shook his head at Brian’s bragging. He wasn’t sure who he was trying to jab, Lindsay or Boyd. It didn’t matter. Boyd had a plan about how to get Brian engaged in that house. “How much does something like that cost?” Lindsay pried and Brian shrugged.

“More than a breadbox and less than Versailles.”

She giggled. “A million?”

“Don’t be rude and don’t be cheap. Let me talk to Gus.”

“Hold on.”

“Daddy, come home!” Gus opened with a demand.

“I think you should come down here and visit me,” Brian countered. One more kid was just what they didn’t need, but he missed Gus.

“Okay! Now?”

“Soon, sure, why not?”

“What’re you doing, Daddy?”

“Riding in the car with Boyd.”

“I want to ride in the car with Boy’!”

They chatted for awhile, and when Lindsay came back on, she said, “You can’t just issue an invitation like that unless you mean it.”

“I do mean it.”

“You have so much going on.”

“We have a nanny, Linds. I’d really like you to fly Gus down for a visit,” he cast a sheepish look at Boyd for not asking first. Boyd shrugged and smiled. He was always happy to see Gus. A little more hectic intrusion into their already hectic lives wouldn’t even raise a ripple.

When they reached the mill house, each carried a sleeping kid upstairs and tucked them in. Seated in the main room with glasses of wine, and Coltrane on the sound system, Boyd said, “Any ETA on Gus?”

“She said she’d get back to me. Sorry to just invite him down without talking to you first. I miss him. When I heard his voice, the invitation just came out of me.”

“I’ll be glad to see him, Brian. Any time. Our home is his home.”

Brian smiled at him and tapped his glass with his own. “Thanks.”

“Speaking of, I have a favor to ask of you.”

“Oh?” Brian raised a cautious brow. “Does it involve a butt plug?”

“It could, but then what couldn’t?” They both chuckled. “Seriously, I need your help.”

“I’m listening.”

“When you go back to New Orleans, I want you to meet with a guy named Sebastian Slade.”

Brian laughed. “Why? Is he casting a gay porn movie? No one is named Sebastian Slade.”

“I suspect he was born with a much less lyrical name than that, but it’s what he goes by now and it’s served him well. He’s pretty well known around here.”

“As?”

“Interior designer. The hot studio to use. I would’ve used him at the gallery but the asshole I called was supposed to be an expert in the art game.”

“Some game, anyway. What do you want me to do? Meet him at your gallery? I really don’t think I should. I don’t have as clear a vision for it as you do.”

“Not the gallery. Our house.”

Brian stared at him. “You want me to lead on finishing out the house?”

“Sure. Why not? You have exquisite taste. I’ll leave it all to you.”

“Bullshit. It’ll end up looking like some Bauhaus fuck den, not a family place. All scaled down and spare and contemporary.”

Boyd shrugged. “If that’s how you see the place, then that’s how it’ll be.”

Brian glared at his partner. His suspicions were aroused. “Why should I have to do all of it?”

“It would help me out. I have to run the mill, close up my law practice, get the kids settled in school and get the gallery started. I realize you’re trying to launch a business, too, but you’ll be in town more often than I and the designer will do all the leg work. You just have to guide them.”

Brian laughed and shook his head. “You’re as transparent as glass, Boyd. You think if I get involved in how the house turns out, I’ll feel more attached to it.”

Boyd shrugged. “And? Am I wrong?”

“Don’t play me.”

“I’m not playing you, Brian. I’m asking you to take the lead in designing the house we plan to share. Will you at least meet with the guy?”

“You set it up, I’ll meet with him,” Brian conceded. “But if you don’t like what we come up with, it’s your own damn fault.”

“I’ll like it if you like it.”

“Are we going to set a budget?”

“Whatever you think we can afford.”

“I have no clue what you can afford. Are you keeping this place furnished?”

“Yes, let’s go from ground up. And let’s worry about the cost when we have estimates.”

“I like spare, I like clean and it’s a more elaborate house than that.”

“I like a new look in an old space. Like here, like your loft. No rules, Brian.”

Brian moved closer to him on the sofa and took his wine glass from him, setting it on the table. “No rules? I like that.” Boyd leaned back as Brian kissed him. The phone interrupted and Boyd frowned as he picked it up.

“Hello?”

“Brian Kinney?”

“Hold on,” he wiggled the receiver at Brian, who frowned as he took it from him.

“Yeah?”

“Is this Brian Kinney?”

“Yes, it is. Who is this?”

“You’re going to burn in hell, you faggot, and so is your boyfriend and those twisted kids you’re raising. Burn in hell!”

Brian hung up with a scowl and Boyd read his look. “What was that?”

Brian checked caller ID, but there was no number. It just read “out of area”. “A lovely greeting from your Southern Gothic brethren,” he said and got up to refill their wine glasses, suddenly out of the mood.

********************************************

Daphne expected some smooth and urban cafe, but Bellamy took her on a drive. “Is there no decent food in New Orleans?” she joked as the rain let up at the borders of the city. He drove a sensible car, an American- made SUV without a lot of bells, whistles and luxuries. She suspected he’d rather have something flashier, but his political aspirations militated against fancy cars. Apparently that prohibition didn’t extend to tailoring. He looked handsome and stylish in a Hugo Boss suit and open-collared shirt.

“I thought you might want something a bit more adventurous,” he responded, taking in her lacy pale yellow camisole and skirt that she wore with a flimsy little jacket covering her shoulders. Her hair was loose instead of pulled up and he liked it better that way. She looked like a schoolgirl, but he had his people verify she was the college graduate she claimed to be. Getting caught with an underage girl was not in his stars.

“I like adventure,” she admitted. And she liked him. What was there not to like? Okay, he was mean to his mother, apparently. That was bad. She liked his mother. But then, she didn’t have all the facts. Her mobile rang and she excused herself and withdrew it from her purse. “Brian, I’m on a date.”

“With what?” he demanded and she rolled her eyes.

“This is my personal space, remember? Can I call you later?”

“I want you to find out everything you can on some interior designer named Sebastian Slade.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m the dad and I say so.”

She giggled at that. “Ok, whatever. Bye.”

“Wait. We got a crank call at home. We need to turn up the heat on the Christians.”

“Do you know how weird that sounds?”

“Yes. So who are you with?”

“Goodnight, Brian.” She hung up and apologized to Bellamy. “I have a boss with no clue about personal boundaries.”

“What was so urgent?”

“He wants me to look up some interior designer named Sebastian Slade.”

“I know Sebastian.”

“You do?”

“Very well. He was responsible for the work I did in my house when I moved in after my father’s partner moved to Savannah.”

“His ‘partner’?”

“Yeah, Charles. Charles is my mother, in all the ways that really matter.”

Daphne regrouped. His father was gay? But…what did he mean about ‘all the ways that matter’? Wasn’t that a direct diss of his real mother? Could Bellamy be gay, too? Was she so accustomed to being around gay men that she could no longer gauge when a man was interested in her as a woman?

“Shocked?” he asked. “If so, you really failed to do your groundwork on me before our meeting. When you asked me what I thought of homos, you should have already known I was raised by a gay couple.”

“Why? Where was your mother?”

“That’s a whole other story.”

“Where’s your dad now?”

“He died, but Charles and I remain close. I make no secret of this. I couldn’t if I tried. My father was very well known, famous, in fact. As was his relationship with Charles. So if you want to know how I feel about homos, I guess I’d have to say that I have the utmost respect for many of them. But I’m not gay, if that’s the next question.”

She sighed, relieved. “So you never lived with your mother?”

“As an infant, but not when I was old enough to remember things clearly. We don’t see eye to eye, never have.”

He pulled up to a small wooden structure built on stilts that overlooked a stretch of bayou. Several cars were parked helter skelter on the gravel drive and three large oil drums beside the building had been converted into smokers and were sending out a heavenly aroma. “Best barbecue in the south,” Bellamy said as he led her up the steps, across the rickety porch and into a large room crowded with tiny tables draped in red and white plaid oilcloth.

The proprietor, a scrawny man the color of rubbed ebony, greeted Bellamy with a hug and called his plump wife over to add to the warmth. They were given a prime table befitting Bellamy’s status. He recommended the “hard” lemonade to Daphne, but asked for unleaded for himself. A drunk driving scandal was another trap that Bellamy intended to avoid.

Bellamy asked if he could order for her. What was delivered was more food than Daphne would eat in a week. Served on brown paper to absorb the juices, her sliced beef sandwich, was a mile high and dripping with smoky sauce. Corn on the cob came in a paper jacket and a plastic bowl held turnip greens with pepper sauce and ham hocks. As soon as she started eating it, she forgot about her waistline and gave in to the divinity of the flavor.

Midway through the meal, she realized this was a first date nightmare of a menu. Corn on the cob was notorious for sticking in the teeth and barbecue sauce would not only be all over her face, but also under her nails. If the corn didn’t stick to her smile, the turnip greens would. As soon as she finished, she fled to the ladies room to be sure she was presentable. She returned to a plate of hot peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream melting on the side.

“You must be joking,” she said as he handed her a spoon.

“I thought we could share it.”

“Bellamy, I weigh 102. I’ve already eaten my weight in barbecue.”

He smiled. “Just have a bite.”

Half a cobbler later, she felt like she was waddling as he left a generous tip and escorted her to the car. “I can’t breathe,” she complained and he laughed.

“I like a girl with a healthy appetite.”

“Do you like a girl who outweighs you?”

“I might. Depends on the girl.”

She giggled at that. “Where are we going?”

“I thought you might want to do some homework.”

“Homework?”

“For your boss. See Sebastian Slade’s work.”

She grinned at him. “Which is code for saying you’re taking me to your place?”

“Wouldn’t take a windtalker to break that one.”

“I may regret it, but why not?”

“That’s the spirit,” he said with a grin, silently thanking her boss for giving him the perfect entrée to a sometimes clumsy invitation.

This has got to be one of my favorite stories and I'm so glad you're posting so often.

Well it seem things between Daphne and Bellamy could be going places. Soon to be heating up for the two of them?

I have to say...I sure do enjoy Boyd and Brian's relationship. Boyd brings out a different side to Brian.

Another great chapter, Brian.

Thanks Susan, I'm glad you're having fun with it. I like to think Boyd awakened something important in Brian, something he didn't think he was capable of showing.

Good chapter Brian we are getting to know Bellamy now. Nice weave of Pitts people into the story loved the gentle questioning probe about Justin, beautifully done such a natural response. My favorite part Gus "Come home Daddy" just like a kid straight to the point and then his response to Brian "okay now" hahaha well done again cheers Chris

I don't know why but I don't trust Bellamy for some reason. When he was driving Daphne out of town for dinner, my inner voice was screaming, "Don't go!" and now that's he's invited her back to his place it yelling even louder.

******

Switching over I like Boyd getting Brian involved in the house even if Brian sees through his reasons behind it. It's so nice to see the growth in Brian that allows him to go back to Canard Rouge despite the discomfort to himself and also to keep his contact with Gus. Can't wait to see Gus's reactions to the new house.

I just posted about this below... like you, a huge red flag went up for me when I realized Daphne had agreed to get in a car and drive to an unknown location with this man, without telling anyone where they were going. It would be one thing if it were someone Boyd or Brian knew and trusted. Even though she knows Lady P, things just don't seem quite right. I'm glad she's got that pink cell phone with her... she may need it to call Brian back if she gets into a bad situation. You just can't be too careful.

That was just delightful! :)
I swear this story gets better and better - and, every time I read a new chapter, I feel as if I'm getting caught up in the lives of my friends. Everyone in this story feels so real to me!

I could have smacked Boyd upside the head as soon as he spoke - Duh sweetie! It was so obvious, Brian didn't want to go back to Canard Rouge! - But I'm glad he pushed gently, and that Brian was able to acknowledge the fact to himself, without having to tell Boyds and make him feel guilty.

The phone call to the Pitts was just right! - I could see Gus' little face demanding to have his own way NOW - and I, too look forward to seeing him ride in the car with ' his Boy' :)

"Because I'm the dad and I say so" ......... Yes I can just picture Brian saying that, and then cringing slightly at the personal admission to how he feels about protecting those he cares about. I think it's lovely that he interupts her date (course, back when I had a boss who did that, I felt differently! - But then, MY boss wasn't as gorgeous as Brian Kinney!)and that he, unwittingly, gave her an extra inroad in the evening. I'm glad that things are going well between Daphne and Bell, and that he picked such a cute spot for their dinner, I think they'd be good for each other!.

I thoroughly enjoyed every word!
Thanks!
TF.

On the other hand, he fed her all that food, so if she has to run away, she won't get far very fast...

I think I've been reading P/CP too long; a nice dinner is no longer just a nice dinner, we have to be looking over our shoulder all the time. Cael says we need tranquilizers; WONDER WHY!?

Ohhh, the screws are starting to turn, and the angst level beginning. Brian not wanting to go back to Canard Rouge, but knowing that it's a good thing for the kids. His reaching out for Gus was heartwarming.

I just can't get a handle on my feelings for Bell. I'll have to wait and see on him.

And that phone call. A lot of references to burning here. It's scary!

Perfect way to start my day. First day of school, going back to work after an insane summer.
Daphne and Bell getting to know one another. He's not quite what she thought, I like that.Assumptions can bite you in the ass. Dangerous to put people in a box and expect them to be there when you get back. I like the way you are giving us insight into this man little by little. The slow way you let us get to know your characters is delicious. So far I'm feeling good about Bell want him to be a good guy.
Brian and his Irish brood.I thought it was funny that he ended up saying just the right thing while covering his fear. Nice to get an update on the 'gang'.Glad Gus is coming.Brian decorating the house while a little obvious on Boyd's part is also the smart move. How else to feel pride and ownership of that house.
All together a wonderful chapter. Just the right mix of love, laughter, information and menace.
Take care friend, Cindy

August 23 2005, 16:28:48 UTC 6 years ago

He didn’t want Boyd to get the wrong idea about his interest. It was more a hope that Justin was happy than personal curiosity.

I respect Brian's desire to not upset Boyd, especially on the heels of Moody's proposition, but I also hope that Boyd sees Brian's interest in Justin's happiness as just another wonderful part of the man he is in love with. At one time, Brian loved Justin too, and the fact that he cares about him now, and wants the best for him, shows that he is loyal to those who have touched his heart and who have (in his eyes) respected his own. Take Michael, for example, or even Ted. Despite mistakes they've both made, and their (sometimes) unwelcome intrusion in Brian's life, Brian does not treat his friends as disposables. Obviously a healthy distance between Brian and Justin is important, but asking Lindsay how Justin is doing demonstrates compassion, and strength of character, two things that I think are very important if he is going to be helping to raise Boyd's children. There you have it.. my in-depth analysis on Brian's psyche. ROTFL. That and a quarter will get you a cup of coffee (who am I kidding? You can't get coffee that cheap anymore).

As for Daph and Bell... jury's still out on what to make of these two. A red flag went up for me, as it did for Arness, when I read the part about him driving her out of the city and her not knowing where they were going. I would never advise any woman to get in a car with a man she hardly knows to drive somewhere as a 'surprise', let alone without telling someone first. Particularly with the issues surrounding her job right now, and Brian's ordeal in Canard Rouge. But even if we can trust Bellamy, I just have this feeling that as far as life experience and that elusive "emotional quotient" go, they may be too different from each other. But I want to wait and see what happens, learn a bit more about him before I rush to judgement.

Very well done, Brian. Your writing is solid and completely captivating.

p.s. Take care of that knee of yours!

Why on earth is Brian friends with Lindsey? Big_Brian, you are very true to canon here, with Lindsey dissing Brian's changes but I really dislike her for this and for the way she asked about the house. It came across as so envious of what Brian now has, as if she can't be happy for him. At least she allows Brian to keep in contact with Gus, that is one thing in her favor and I am not so sure whether canon-Lindsey would do the same.
Boyd reads like a wonderful mixture of clever/manipulating and open and is perfectly suited to have a successful relationship with someone as complicated as Brian in my view. If he was different Brian would start brooding and closing up and the distance between them would grow maybe to dangerous proportions. I really like all those tidbits of realism you add to their relationship, like the trouble about the disparity between their wealth and how they handle that.

I am not so sure about Bellamy and Daphne. I like that he is respectful of his father and his father's partner but I am not sure that he intends more than a one-night-stand with Daphne. Well, if she thinks she can handle that, good for her. I might even like it more if he dropped her, because it would make for some interesting developments if those two don't immediately get together and fall in love.

While they are not in this chapter, thinking about Bellamy/Daphne made me remember Frank and Ted. Strangely I have high hopes for them as a couple. I really like the way you have written them in "Burn" so far. While Frank came across as a bit disturbed in "Swamp Fever" he seems to have his act together now, and I would like to see him in a relationship were he is not second-best.

August 24 2005, 23:16:49 UTC 6 years ago

Thanks, Rose. Sometimes what you intend and what happens are two different things. I don't usually do things the easy way, so we'll see how it goes. We'll see more about Frank and Ted later. Unlike QAF, I don't consider this an ensemble show, though. It's really all about Brian and Boyd.

Can't people just leave the boys in peace for awhile. I'm thinking those boys should invest in caller ID and only answer the ones they know...but I guess I wouldn't have wanted that call on an answering machine either...sigh.

Ooooh, goody, a visit from gorgeous Gus. Brian is such an old softy. Can't wait to hear Daph tell her "boss" all about the design style of Sebastian Slade (yep, I was thing the same thing as Brian about the name)and how she came to discover said style.

Enjoyed the update on the crew in the Pitts. Brian's interest in Justin's well being sounded pretty much like natural curiosity and concerned (but not too concerned) friend.

I think I'm as anxious as Brian about his and Boyd's separation. Just don't like the idea of the boys without each other- even if it's just during the week. I would like to read about the house update- the new look to old space comment reminded me of SFU and how Keith and David had updated the drab Fisher home- totally cool.

Thanks for the updated chapter. Love the new format.

It's not surprising that Brian is reluctant to be back in Canard Rouge, given all that happened, but I'm looking forward to it -- sort of like the visit back to Pittsburgh in Swamp Fever. Of course I don't want Boyd to spend too much time there, especially when Brian's in NO. I trust Brian, but I don't want him to get TOO lonely!

Asking Lindsay not to be rude or cheap is a lost cause. It'll be fun to have Gus visit, though. Gus is too young to come on his own, though, so I assume Linds will come too. Mel also? It might be interesting to hear Mel's take on NO and CR, although I doubt much of it would be printable. Brian might feel a sudden urge to take her on a gator hunt.

Brian decorating the house should also be fun. While I prefer his style to the style native to that type of house, I hope he remembers that white sofas don't go real well with children. Or pets -- does Belle still have the kitten that she got from Charlie? Hope so. Somehow the thought of big tall Brian dealing with little kitten amuses me.

That barbecue sounds awfully good. Messy though, poor Daphne. I'm a little uncomfortable with the getting in car and going out of the city with strange man part of this, especially when she's drinking and he isn't. I think I trust Bellamy not to be a really bad guy, but not necessarily good romantic material. Going to his place isn't such a good idea either, but at least someone as careful as he is will use protection if they end up doing what I expect they will. Daphne's not using good business judgment, however. Brian needs this man's help with Burn, and if things go wrong between Daphne and Bellamy, it could have an impact on Burn.

Lots of pots on the stove, you really keep things stirring!

Sometimes its hard to juggle all those burners, Ann Marie, but I'm trying. I love good barbecue cooked in an oil drum. I can't give anything away on Daphne and Bellamy of course.

Yes, I'm going to say it again - another great chapter, Brian! (Maybe I should make that my sig line, or my icon or something!)

Loved poor Brian going back to the place he hates just because he thinks it's important for the kids to feel secure that he and Boyd are their family. Typical Brian - he puts the needs of those he loves above his own, sacrifices his own desires. That's what he's always done. (Are you listening, Justin? Sacrifice is what LOVE is all about.)

Uhm, hate to tell Brian, but he really doesn't have a nanny's services at this point! I mean, they've hired her and they're paying her, but she's "on hold" until they move to NO, because as the guys said, they're capable of taking care of the kids for the few months until the move to NO, and more importantly, there's no room for her in CR. So, adding Gus to the mix at this particular point is going to be interesting.

And what the hell IS Brian going to do in CR? Babysit? LOL! I don't see it, and I also don't see how he can leave NO in the middle of the Burn project. I guess a 4 hour RT commute isn't intolerable. But sitting around CR day after day babysitting would be. In my opinion. I'd go crazy. So, I'm feeling proud of Brian for being a stand-up guy, but really sorry for him, too!

Now, what the hell is Daphne thinking? She's agreeing to go back to this Lothario's sex den? I'm simply shocked that a nice girl would do that, LOL! Of course, Daphne has never been a shy about sex. After all, she asked her gay best friend to relieve her of her virginity - one of the major low points (as in, Cowlip, what the FUCK are you smoking?) of QAF. So, maybe she isn't adverse to playing hide the salami with Bellamy. But that's not a very smart thing to do if she expects to be taken seriously as a professional. I admit, I'm dying to know what Lady P thinks about this Daphne/Bellemy connection! Can't wait for the next chapter.

Hi, Cat! I don't think Brian will babysit much at all. They're in school. Boyd has alternatives there to help out. I think he plans to work remotely on his business. Sometimes romance overtakes work, though, both for Brian and for Daphne. I really appreciate your insight and I agree that love involves a lot of sacrifice, even if it isn't ALL about sacrifice, it's part of the game and not so bad. When it's mutual.

I cannot blame Brian for not wanting to go back to that one-horse redneck town, I know I wouldn't want to. I am glad that he is if only to be with Boyd and the kids. Loved the conversation with Linds and that Gus is coming for a visit.

That phone call...What sick, sick people there are out there! They are the ones who will burn in hell, what with all of that hatred they have in their souls...feel almost sorry for them...almost.

Daphne and Bellamy...damn I want to go to that place and eat I know that! The phone call from Brian, the because I am the dad line...LOL, what a Brian thing to say, I just love the dynamics between those two. And how sly of Bellamy to invite her to see Sebastian's work, that just so happens to be at his place, quite the little player I would say.

Great chapter Brian, and thanks for posting so soon...I am looking forward to the next!!!

I think you're right about Bellamy being a player but Daphne's a smart cookie, too.

Not only would that sauce be on my face and under my nails but in my lap too. I guess Daph is neater than I. I'm not to worried about Daph at Bell's place. He way to much of a politician to do something that stupid. I figure he's fishing for info much the way she is. Gus, as always, adorable. Brian and adult thinking just make me gushy. sigh

I love the scenes with Gus and Brian on QAF. Gale played them so well and that kid looks so much like him. Interesting match up.

Big B thanks for the nice surprise. I didn't expect another chapter so soon.

I can't wait to see Gus interact with Brian, Boyd and the kids. Loved his spontaneous invitation. I wonder if there will be a bit of jealousy by Gus of how close Brian has become with Boyd's kids, particularly with Belle.

Daphne at the restaurant was so real, worrying about the food getting every where and sticking in her teeth. I would have had the BBQ all over myself. I must admit I can't wait to see what will happen at Bellamy's place. Love how she keeps trying to remind Brian that on her personal time, he can't tell her what to do. Of course he does with his "Because I'm the dad and I say so" LOL I loved that line....

Boyd not letting Brian have his brood, oh I loved how he kept pulling until Brian had to answer him. Even if it wasn't what was exactly bothering him he had to engage in conversation.

This is my favorite passage, I just love how honest and straight forward they are with eachother. It's very sexy.

Boyd shrugged. “And? Am I wrong?”

“Don’t play me.”

“I’m not playing you, Brian. I’m asking you to take the lead in designing the house we plan to share. Will you at least meet with the guy?”

The phone call oh g-d. I hope that Gus and the kids don't get any back lash from the very small minded people of CR. Then we'll really see protective Brian in action.

A great chapter as always
Can't wait for more

"bauhaus fuck den"...hehe.

Wow, one little move across the country and I missed a whole mini-story. All caught up now though. I liked the Moody issue and as always your new characters are a treat.

I'm really worried about that "you're gonna burn" phone call...what with the new house and thinking about Lady P's house and Brian there all alone...not good. Have to say I'm not a bit worried about Daphne on a date though. I don't read Bellamy as evil or psychotic.

Reading these last few chapters together was great. You're writing is smooth as silk...it's a joy. Transplanting from out West to back East has left me feeling a bit out-of-sorts. Finally getting my computer back and the internet going and getting back here has made me feel like I've brought a little piece of "home" with me. Thanks for all your hard work, Brian.

Oh, I freakin' love it!!! so good... soo soo good. I am really diggin' Bell. I hope he remains a good guy and a good guy for Daphne to find. That girl needs some lovin'. And darn, Brian and Boyd are at the Mill all of 2 seconds and they are getting crank calls... that sucks!

Loved the dad line that brian says to daphne.. too cute.

Brian, I liked Brian’s admission of his monogamous state “No, I only let Boyd munch on me these days.” Not only has he accepted monogamy but he actually wants people to know that he and Boyd are monogamous.

I think Brian’s sense of ownership of the house needs to come from believing he has a right to it, as Boyd’s partner, not because he decorated it, with Boyd’s money no less. I think they need to do the house together, or at least Boyd needs to contribute to it quite a bit, after all they will both be living there and sharing the space, so it needs to reflect both of them. Plus, the act of “creating” something together can be very powerful.

“Was she so accustomed to being around gay men that she could no longer gauge when a man was interested in her as a woman?” Daphne questioning her own sexuality was a very poignant moment.

While I believe you described Bellamy as someone who "sleeps around" you also described him as being devoted to his father and his father’s partner and an honest and conscientious politician. I don’t think Bellamy is a nefarious character. He may be a ladies man but I think Daphne is a big girl and can take care of herself. I even suspect she can gain the upper hand in this relationship.

Four of my favorite lines
“Boyd smiled at his lover’s classic profile, never loving him more than he did at that moment and never less able to show him how he felt.”

“The proprietor, a scrawny man the color of rubbed ebony, greeted Bellamy with a hug and called his plump wife over to add to the warmth.”

“As soon as she started eating it, she forgot about her waistline and gave in to the divinity of the flavor.”

“”That’s the spirit,” he said with a grin, silently thanking her boss for giving him the perfect entrée to a sometimes clumsy invitation.”

Your devoted fan,
Jill

Glad that Boyd is so in tune with Brian that he was able to pick up on his brooding. Brian's concern is completely understandable. I suspect there is also some underlying trauma from the shooting. Something he didn't deal with due to his precarious condition. In my experience when a person comes so close to death their emotional issues only resurface later, once the body has had a chance to heal.

Unfortunatley I must agree with some of your readers about my initial reaction to Dapne going off with Bell. I was almost a victim and unfortunately I have had to treat victims.

Thanks, Beth. I'm an Irish brooder and my partner always pokes at my psyche until I come out of my brood. Interesting insight into the mental side of a traumatic wound. I know that was true for me. I healed pretty quickly after both shootings, but first time around about six weeks out of the hospital, I heard a car backfire and I just went down. It took me a long time to get over my fear of loud noises. I didn't seem as freaked after the second shooting, however. I guess I got used to it.
