Happy Fourth of July friends! I hope it's a safe day for all of you and you see people you love and eat some good food and stay out of the sun!! Be careful handling those firecrackers! HA! Lecture over. Now have a cold one on me and enjoy yourself and enjoy all the beautiful symbols of freedom exploding in the night sky!
It's broiling hot here, but that's the holiday, I guess! Hope all of you are well and happy. Brian (ps Happy Canada Day to my northern friends, cough, Heather, cough!)
Ok, vamps, here it is. The final chapter. I appreciate your hanging in with me and I really want to thank Heather and Sandi and Arness for the beautiful images! In this post, Heather did the icon, Arness the washington scene and Sandi the bedroom scene. Thanks thanks thanks ladies. Thanks to you all. I am not disappearing, just recharging some creative juices, I hope. I have some ideas! I so appreciate your friendship and encouragement, please stay in touch and let me know how things are. Happy father's day, while I am at it. Have a wonderful summer, and thanks again, Brian

For those of you still reading this story, I plan to post the conclusion if not today, then in the next two days. It depends on how much time I can muster in one setting. I do want to tell you how much I appreciate those readers who hung in for the whole story and who gave me feedback and encouragement. I especially want to thank Heather and Sandi and Minion for all the great illustrations that added so much to the tale.
I'm not sure where I go next, judging from things perhaps this internet method of writing has played out for me. It was a lot of fun and I learned so much, so thanks to you all.
I hope each of you and all of you have good things in your futures, love, laughter, joy and health. I am working on a couple things I hope to have published one day. EIther by a real publisher or by an online publisher. I will let you know, but of course it would be original characters and both of the ideas I am developing are a bit dark, but not horror genre.
Thanks again and look for the conclusion soon. Brian

I hope you have time today to enjoy life with friends and loved ones. Take a moment to remember those men and women who are far from home and living with the threat of imminent death every day. Remember their wives, husbands, lovers, children, parents, who are celebrating this day without this critical member of their family. And remember those who came back less than whole, missing limbs, or sight, or mental stability, who are trying to reclaim a life they left behind.
Most of all, remember those who died for us, for our freedom, in wars too old to remember and battlefields now covered with flowers and lying in graves no one remembers to visit. These were usually young people cut off before their lives were realized, who died too soon, who should never be forgotten but who have been. At least remember the gifts we enjoy because of what they lost.
The true heroes are often anonymous and many more never had the chance to be heroes before they were cut down in battle. Don't let their loss be in vain. Fight for your freedom at home. Fight for the causes in which you believe. Fight for peace.
And after you take a moment to remember, enjoy the rest of your holiday and be kind to each other.
Brian

Happy Mother's Day to all of you who have nurtured children, yours or someone else's, and provided loving homes for our little furry friends. Happy Mother's Day to those who welcomed your child's spouse into your hearts. Being a good mother is one of the best things anyone can do for the world.
Enjoy your day and thank you for adding to the good of the universe.
Love, Brian
PS I am running late on the chapter. Soon.
My little feline friend, aged 17, died last Monday after a brief illness. She had a seizure Thursday night and despite doctors and hospitals, she had a series of seizures and on Monday was paralyzed from the middle down. There was no good choice but to euthanize her due to her advanced age and debility. She went very peacefully but I have had a hard time coming back from it.
Heather, she was wrapped in your little turquoise soft fleecy blanket when I drove her to the vet's for her last moments. It was her favorite, and it gave her comfort.
She was a great cat, a Maine Coon, and had a dog like personality that I greatly admired. I still feel I can see her from the corner of my eye and in the shadows of the house, but I am trying to pull myself out of this. I'll post this weekend if not sooner, but I wanted to let you know why the delay. Thanks for understanding, Brian

Here is the next installment. The icon is by Heather and the images are by Sandi. I am dedicating this one to Gale Harold, who has come through a lot this year, but who prevails over adversity and I hope to see him soon in a new project or role. Until then, I had fun picturing him playing this role. Be well, Gale. Enjoy! Brian

I am not African American, but I am an American who was moved by the words of a great man who died before I was born, and of an African American who is about to become the leader of the free world. When Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr said to judge a person by the content of his character and not the color of his skin, that resonated with me. Without the sacrifices of men like Dr. King and women like Rosa Parks and all of the folks of every hue who joined in their determination to make America the land that Lincoln envisioned but that fell short for so long after his administration, Barack Obama would not be on the verge of taking that historic oath.
Without change that came long after these sacrifices were made and the continuing drumbeat of people demanding evolution of our society, we would not be where we are now, one day away from having an African American sworn into the highest office of our land. People like Dr. King who saw the beatings, experienced the beatings, saw the schools in segregated shame, saw colleagues beaten, hung, assassinated, spent time behind bars, had crosses burned on lawns and ultimately gave up their lives for the cause knew that change was for future generations, not to be experienced by the ones who sacrificed most, but still they fought. They fought for the future.
I have been on many battlefields and never have I stopped to worry if the soldier next to me was white or black. I only cared if he was competent. They always were. White, black, brown, every hue, they all fought and bled and sometimes died with the same bravery, the same determination. I was let down only once by a fellow soldier, and he happened to be white. I don't judge all white soldiers by his mistakes, nor do I claim all men of color are heroic. We were all just men in the same uniform, the skin color was not an issue. Because of the unit of service I was in, there were no women. There were gays, however, and I am proof of that.
Those who knew didn't care, because I was a good soldier and they could rely on me. Sexual orientation, like color of the skin, was secondary to that. Barack Obama says he will end "don't ask, don't tell" and allow gay men and women to serve openly and proudly. I am holding him to that promise.
But for now, for this day and for tomorrow, I am not viewing this history as a gay man or a white man, but as a father. And like most fathers, I want a better world for my son and his children. A better world for me is not a world where we fight and die in two wars. A better world is not where our economy is so fractured, people are afraid and on the brink of personal disaster. A better world is not where there are no jobs for us or for our children once they finish college. A better world is not without hope.
Martin Luther King Jr. gave hope to a generation, and now it is Barack Obama's turn to pay it forward. It doesn't matter if you didn't vote for him or don't care for him, you are part of this historic moment, whether you wanted it or not. Please embrace it for what it is. We are showing ourselves and the world that we are an inclusive society. We are desperate for change. We are willing to trust. If Barack Obama can take that oath of office, maybe in my son's lifetime a gay man or woman can put their hand on that bible and while their partner watches, take the same oath.
I pray for the safe passage of power to Barack Obama, and for his vision of change to be what America needs. I pray for the United States of America. And I thank the heroes, like Martin Luther King Jr for making this day possible. Sometimes hope is all we have. Hold tight. If we all work together, how can we fail?
Brian
